Bristol Art Museum

In 2010 JHL Tecture was approached by the Bristol Art
Museum to help with multi-phase renovation project
to re-purpose a historic carriage house into the home
of the museum. The carriage house was built in 1867
and is located on the property of Linden Place, a
nationally re-known Greek revival landmark.

The design was mostly an exterior restoration and
interior reconfiguration to turn the then unused
carriage house into a usable space.

The building needed to be structurally stabilized, which
included a removal of much of the first floor for new piers
to be built, while reusing the original beams and decking.
New new laminated interior glass storms were used to
provide UV protection, and sound attenuation, as to help
protect the artwork inside and to protect the historic
integrity of the windows. Finally, a new ADA entrance was
added off Wardwell street, which also provides a preview
of the art of the current event featured in the Gallery and
throughout the Museum.

The interior program includes lobby and small gallery, a
large exhibition gallery, and upstairs classrooms. Much
of the mill work on the interior was been developed from
salvaged wood found inside the carriage house.
